Windows & Office Licensing Intelligence

Microsoft licensing is among the most misunderstood segments of the gray market. This module explains activation architectures, license types, and revocation scenarios—in plain, educational language.

License Types Compared

OEM Original Equipment Manufacturer

Tied to a single motherboard/device. Not transferable after hardware change. Often cheapest on gray markets—highest mismatch risk if sold as "Retail."

Retail Full Packaged Product (FPP)

Transferable between devices (within Microsoft limits). Generally preferred for consumers seeking flexibility. Still subject to genuine-software validation.

Volume MAK / KMS

Intended for organizations. Keys leaked to consumers may be deactivated in audit sweeps. Not appropriate for typical home users.

Why Cheap Keys Get Revoked

  • Volume keys sold outside authorized channels
  • OEM keys rebranded as Retail listings
  • Stolen credit card chargebacks triggering license invalidation
  • Geographic restriction violations on Office 365 / Microsoft 365

Educational takeaway: A low price alone does not prove illegality, but it should trigger scrutiny. Microsoft’s activation servers can flag keys months after purchase. We recommend Retail licenses from sellers with escrow and documented refund policies—not claims of "Microsoft partnership."
